Cinemavolta -- Weekend (Casasonica)
Cinemavolta, from Montichiari, a town near Italy's northern city
of Brescia -- where those Beretta guns are made -- is one of
Italy's best rock and roll bands, thanks to its Italian-flavored
BritPop sound. Electric and acoustic guitars fuel melodic and
mostly poppy -- but at times harder -- songs. "Weekend" has
Elvis Costello's knack for melody, "Uomo Contorto" may bring to
mind Supergrass and "Occhi Come Chiodi" has a late-period
Stereophonics vibe. But singer Max Tozzi wields a powerful voice
of his own and the band lives in that difficult to navigate
territory where there is both diversity and cohesiveness. But
Cinemavolta's variety comes in flavors of straight up rock, as
the band doesn't dabble much in electronica or dance music,
unlike labelmates Subsonica. |
